搞清楚所謂「鄉土社會」這個概念，就可以幫助我們去理解具體的中國社會。本課程閱讀的指定用書全面的展現了中國基層社會的面貌，而「這裡講的鄉土中國，並不是具體的中國社會的描繪，而是包含在具體的中國基層傳統社會裡的一種特具的體系，支配著生活的各個方面」。本課程將透過該書中簡潔的語言，對中國基層社會的主要特徵進行概述和分析，包括鄉村社區、文化傳遞、家族制度、道德觀念、權力結構、社會規範、社會變遷等。當中涉及中國社會的傳統結構與中國國民性格，對當今社會人與人、群體與群體之間如何相處，仍有諸多可借鑒之處。Understanding the concept of "rural society" can help us understand specific Chinese society.
